Call Me Big Red

Have you ever watched a movie and wanted to be one of the characters?

I remember as a child watching movies and then pretending that I was whichever character or animal inspired me from that particular flick. Willy watched the Disney movie, Secretariat, and got inspired. He thinks he looks like him, what do you think?

Well, because Willy knows just how to sweet talk me into things, I ordered him this fun little costume so that he could act out his imagination. He was so proud of it.

He was even excited that the jockey wore checkered silks. No, they are not quite the same color of blue as Ron Turcotte wore, but Willy was still thrilled.

Willy was the famous Secretariat for the day. He preferred to be called Big Red.

I even recorded a couple of videos so that Willy could show you how great he looked racing across the yard, carrying his trusty jockey safely on his back.

OFF TO THE RACES!

“Do you give the horse its strength or clothe its neck with a flowing mane? Do you make it leap like a locust, striking terror with its proud snorting? It paws fiercely, rejoicing in its strength, and charges into the fray. It laughs at fear, afraid of nothing; it does not shy away from the sword. The quiver rattles against its side, along with the flashing spear and lance. In frenzied excitement it eats up the ground; it cannot stand still when the trumpet sounds. At the blast of the trumpet it snorts, ‘Aha!’ It catches the scent of battle from afar, the shout of commanders and the battle cry.” Job 39: 19-25

AND HE’S OFF!

Aspiring Artists

It was a beautiful day to be creative!

Willy and his friends, Sadie and Jessi, were feeling inspired, or rather, I was feeling inspired and they played along.  They weren’t too crazy about my idea at first but were great sports and we had a lot of fun.

Sadie did not really like the feel of paint between her toes the first time. But once she got to run across the fabric, the sheet, the lawn and the sidewalk – spreading color everywhere she went – she felt better.

Willy watched very closely to the whole process before it was his turn. He was not sure what was happening and not real sure he wanted a turn. Of course, the paint that we used was non-toxic child friendly paint. Some of the colors were even glow in the dark!

\

Jessica joined in the fun too! Although at first she was unsure, Jessi was the biggest contributor to the painted lawn. She had way more fun running through the paint and then adding bright colors to the grass.

Finally it was Willy’s turn! He did not mind the feeling of the paint between his toes. I think he kind of liked it! Willy, the creative genius that he is, was totally into the project.

Willy got his creative juices flowing, making sure the masterpiece flowed. You will remember, he painted his very own acrylic painting, so he has a real flare for art.

He put on the finishing touches all by himself!

And not only is the finished project a beautiful masterpiece, but it is practical as well.

Of course, after Willy and his friends ran around the yard, leaving pretty little splashes of color everywhere they went, they got much needed baths!

Sometimes, you just have to let loose; let your creative self explode! Just ask Willy.

Fun at the Fair

Giddy Up Doggy Country Fair

I don’t know about where you live, but here where I live September has always been when we have had our County Fair. I love going to the fair. I have even entered my art in the past. This year, due to a foot issue, I wasn’t able to attend. So, Willy and I decided to have our own fair!

Willy entered his Acrylic painting entitled, “Butterflies”, an abstract piece. Since he was the only entrant, I guess that means he won first place! He was so proud of his accomplishment!

What’s a fair without the games and other attractions? Willy decided to have a Kissing Booth. Doesn’t he look kissable?

He even got a customer! Jessica stopped by his booth, she loves kisses!

It wasn’t the same as going to the real thing, but it was still fun for Willy, and that is all that matters! Our County Fair always seems to usher in Fall, and the air has definitely been showing some signs that it won’t be long. What a glorious time of year!

Until next time, enjoy the cooler nights and the crisp mornings.  Fall is coming!

Happy Labor Day!

Willy and his friends enjoyed a Picnic this Labor Day Weekend.

I decided to have a doggy picnic this weekend. Carly Sue, Willy and Sadie Rose were all decked out in their western style bibs. They didn’t know what was going on, but they knew treats were involved, so they were game for anything!

They had a great time, but I had a hard time getting good photos of the actual picnic. They were a tad excited about the PB&J sandwiches! I did get some awesome photos before the food frenzy began.

Willy knows the ropes and poses pretty good on cue. We are still working on the whole “watch me” command, but all in all he is a great model.

Sadie Rose started to get the hang of it once she realized that if she sat still and looked at me she got a treat.

She followed Willy’s lead very well, which made my job a lot easier. I am in a temporary foot boot (brace) and my ability to maneuver around is limited. It was very helpful to have Sadie and Willy sit so still for me. Carly Sue on the other hand …

Carly is only 4 months old, very busy and clueless when it comes to photo shoots, sitting still and looking at me. With her it was just a matter of snapping the camera like crazy hoping for the best. I was very happy with this photo of her.

Dog photography is an art. It is a challenge as well, and I am still learning. It helps when you have a great model, like my Willy the Kid. The more I work with him, the easier and better it gets. I hope you enjoy Willy’s life through the camera lens. Have a safe and enjoyable Labor Day.

What’s on the Menu?

Willy went out for lunch and dined in style!

I decided that Willy and I needed to explore our own hometown and discover new adventures to be had locally. We discovered a fabulous, dog friendly cafe in down town Prescott, Arizona called The Barley Hound.

They bring out water for your four-legged family member when they bring yours. They even have meals you can order off the menu for your dog! What fun! Willy ordered the steak and rice.

After we ordered, Willy waited patiently for his food. We enjoyed the beautiful day out on the cafe patio. It was a perfect day for eating outdoors.

They brought Willy’s food out on a Frisbee! Willy really enjoyed eating his lunch beside me.  He felt extra special.

When he was finished eating, he had a new toy to play with! This place is so  much fun. For all my local friends and even those who may wish to travel to visit Prescott, The Barley Hound is a MUST for your itinerary!

With a full tummy, Willy relaxed and did a little “people watching” while I finished  my lunch and dessert. The food is amazing with fun options to order such as duck fries and shark tacos! The upside down Key lime Pie … YUM! If you are a connoisseur of fine beer, like my son Ty, you will appreciate their great selection of local brewed light or dark beer.

Willy and I are having fun exploring our own “back yard” and can’t wait to share our adventures with you! Until next time, be sure to take time out of your day to relax and enjoy where you live!

National Watermelon Day 2017

Willy the Kid and his gang celebrated in style!.

Their celebration started off with a lively game of Watermelon Roll, which perhaps is a dogs version of  the Watermelon Crawl.  Rusty, Carly, Ammo and Willy had so much fun rolling the watermelon around the lawn. It was the “Best Day of Willy’s Life”, well until the next best day!

Willy’s son, Ammo, knew there just had to be something wonderful inside this big green ball.

Willy waited patiently for the special treat I promised him – the prize inside the big green ball.

I cut the watermelon up and let them enjoy the sweet deliciousness of this wonderful summer fruit. This was Willy (and his pals) very first time eating watermelon. They loved it!

Willy savored every bite of his piece of watermelon.  He took his time which is quite unusual for him. I think he liked his special surprise treat.

*** For my regular readers, yes, I did post this a few days early. But, I wanted to post it on the actual National Watermelon Day. Also, my husband and I are going on a trip this weekend and I will be on the road Sunday, my regular day. Until next time, enjoy all the things that only summer holds, like watermelon!

Fun in the Pool

Hot summer days equal cool summer fun!

Here on the ranch, when the temperature rises to the 90’s, it is time for the doggy pool. Willy was totally prepared.

With swim goggles and swim trunks on, it was time to dive in and cool off. Boy oh boy, did that cool water feel good on such a hot day!

Once Willy was cooled off, it was time for a little sunbathing on his doggy size beach towel.

Willy tried to get his buddies to come swim with him, but they would rather be in the air-conditioned house. Oh well, more room for Willy. He loves the water. Any water – cow tanks, horse troughs, dog water troughs, sprinklers, swimming pools, but not bath water.

After a fun-filled afternoon getting cooled off in the pool, Willy was ready for a relaxing nap. So he let the sun dry him off while he kicked back on his towel and then we went into the nice cool house.

Until next time, may your summer days be filled with love and laughter.

Patriotic Pup

Happy 4th of July!

Willy and the rest of our family are very patriotic. We love our country and love to celebrate our independence. I think Willy likes the family BBQ best though. He and his buddies are “ground sweepers” at that event.

We went all out for this photo shoot! We couldn’t help ourselves. We even talked Willy’s pal Rusty into a few poses.

Here where we live is home to the World’s Oldest Rodeo. Prescott, Arizona and the surrounding towns have birthed some of the greatest rodeo cowboys of all time. Rodeo is part of our family heritage as well and several of our family members (including one of my sons) have competed in the past and some are still competing in this very rodeo today. I think Willy makes a great looking cowboy, don’t you?

Although we love to have fun on this holiday, we are humbled by the sacrifices made by our United States military, past and present, that allow us to continue to live in freedom. We are not only a rodeo family, but have family who have served and are currently serving in the US Military. Willy LOVES his military uncles! So to all veterans and active duty, we salute you and thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Willy wore his best patriotic tie to honor those who fight for Flag and Freedom.

As you and your loved ones celebrate our country’s independence, and enjoy all the festivities, don’t forget to thank those you meet who have served or are serving in our military, because without them you would have nothing to celebrate.

This past week has had its share of intense, gut wrenching moments as we stood at a distance watching our beloved mountains burn in the Goodwin Fire. The fire knocked on the doors of several houses on our family’s 5th generation ranch headquarters, coming within 200 yards of one. Thanks to our brave fire fighters, all homes and structures were saved. But the fire continues to burn as I type this.  Times like this make you realize just what matters; what truly has value. Things can be replaced – lives can not. Just one more reminder that life is about those we love – so live well and love well.

In light of those who have already lost their homes to this fire and those still in its path, I’d like to close this post with some of the lyrics from Lee Greenwood’s song “God Bless the USA”.

If tomorrow all the things were gone
I’d worked for all my life
And I had to start again
With just my children and my wife
I’d thank my lucky stars
To be living here today
Cause the flag still stands for freedom
And they can’t take that away
And I’m proud to be an American
Where at least I know I’m free
And I won’t forget the men who died
Who gave that right to me
And I gladly stand up
Next to you and defend her still today
Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land
God bless the USA

Six Places at Once

Not too many dogs, or people for that matter, can say they have been to six places at once!

Willy and I took a little trip last week. We drove to Delta, Colorado. Willy is always excited for another adventure.

Our first stop was The Four Corners National Monument. Now I know that it is true that when you stand at a certain spot on the monument you are in four states at the same time, but did you know that you are also standing in two different Native American Reservations? So Willy actually was at SIX places at once: Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, the Navajo Reservation as well as the Ute Reservation.

Can I just say that it was HOT that day! It was 108 degrees so I did not let Willy’s paws be on the hot sidewalk longer than it took to snap a couple quick photos. This was the best photo I could get, but believe me when I say, he truly was six places at once. After this quick stop we were on the road again into Colorful Colorado!

Can I just say this was by far the most BEAUTIFUL drive I have ever been on thus far in my 53 years of living on this earth. We followed the Dolores River for miles and miles.

We saw some gorgeous scenery. This was June 19th and there was still snow on the mountains.

An absolutely stunning sight where lush green meets snowy mountains.

We arrived at our destination and picked up Willy’s new friend, Carly Sue. Then we checked into our hotel room. Willy and Carly got to know each other then we got some much needed sleep for the journey back home the next day.

Until next time, stop to enjoy the beauty around you.

Shopping Day for Willy

Although we have chain stores here, Willy & I prefer to shop local.

Willy went with me to our local, family owned pet supply store, Pet Headquarters in Prescott Valley, Arizona. As always, Willy loves adventure. Willy’s favorite place to ride in the truck is on the console so he can be close to me. It also gives him a great place to look out the windshield.

We needed dog food and 40 lb bags are too heavy for me and Willy, so we used a shopping cart. Willy couldn’t believe how many brands of dog food there were in the store. He didn’t recognize any of them!

Willy was excited when we finally came to the section that had the dog food he eats. Willy LOVES to eat and he LOVES his Victor Dog food. Here were the bags and the smell he was used to! My dogs love Victor brand dog food and I have a couple of picky dogs. Quality dog food that is reasonably priced, Victor makes for happy, healthy little Jacks!

Next we went down the toy aisle. Oh so many toys to look at. Total eye candy for Jack Russell Terriers. It was like Christmas in June!

Willy REALLY wanted me to buy him a new toy. Problem was, he just couldn’t decide what he wanted. There were so many toys to choose from.

He considered a tennis ball, but I wouldn’t let him. I reminded him that the cover ends up torn off by him or one of the other dogs as soon as we get home.

I steered him toward the tough dog toy section. He had to look at them all! He finally decided upon a new Zogoflex tug toy by West Paw Design – those cool looking toys on the far right of this picture. My dogs love them and they are virtually indestructible! Oh, and they are guaranteed, so if something does happen to them, West Paw will replace them. Willy and I highly recommend these toys.

All in all, it was a pretty fun day trip. Willy and I leave tomorrow for an out of state trip. Stay tuned!

*Disclaimer* Neither Willy nor I receive any compensation from Pet Headquarters, Victor brand dog food or West Paw Design. We just wanted to share with you our recommendations.
